So you are new to the Sport of Paintball. Welcome. Glad to have you aboard. You will find that all those stereotypes you have heard
about paintball players are just as true as they are false. You will also find that once you start to play you are part of something bigger.
Paintballers might be a little crazy but they are always ready to shake a hand and make a new friend. They are also passionate about
their sport, and they all care deeply about how the game is played, portrayed and represented. You might not get it at first but once
you hit the field and get hooked, you will get the "buy more gear bug" and then you will understand. This page was made to help new
and even novice
players get a few tips on how to approach the sport at first. If you havent played before and want to learn more, you
have come to the right place, and "Yes" paintballs hurt, expecially if they hit you in meaty areas, but only for a few seconds so long as
you and your friends are playing the
right way. Keep in mind always that if you dont follow the rules you can seriously injure someone
so lets start things off by making sure you read the rules that every Paintballer should live by when playing. Click and take a moment:
The Paintballer's Oath
Now that that is out of the way, please remember that if you follow those
simple rules,
you will always be safe and doing your part for our sport.
Let us begin
--------------------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER ONE - A SUMMARY OF A DAY OF PAINTBALL
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The standard paintball field will provide you with rental gear for a fee of usually $20.00. This includes a scratched up mashed up
paintball gun, we like to call them markers, its P.C. although I dont think it matters really. There is a movement to call them
markers to get away from the association with the word gun, but personally my opinion is that our society is based on guns, they are mentioned in our constitution and
I think you are adult enough to make your own decision. Here's a good trick if playing in the woods, call it a gun, if around inflatables,
call it a marker.
The rental also includes a pair of scratched up goggles that generally fog easily and ruin your day of play, depending
on the field you go to this might not be the case, but the point is if after playing your first time you find you want to play again, make the $$ investment into a nice pair of THERMAL (not Fog Resistant) Goggles. There are plenty of great prices at your local Wallmart or even online. Just remember Thermals generally never fog and will make your experience even better. You are also required to buy paintballs of course, specifcally from the Field. Yes I know the case of paintballs at Walmart were cheaper, but fields make money from selling paint, and most fields only allow their own paint to be fired, so save yourself that 10 bucks and buy paintballs at the field.
As far as buying a marker goes, I dont recommend it for your first time since you dont know what style you like to play yet, and there are plenty of people willing to let you try test firing thier marker at the target range, and no matter what anyone tells you, all paintball guns generally fire the same distance and speed, all that bs about accuracy depends on the player 90% of the time and not the marker. The only bonus of having your own marker is looking Sexay and increasing your rate of fire, and the convencience of making less trips to get a refill of Air.
That being said make sure your first time is with othe players of your playing level also using rented gear or basic semi-auto gear, mechanical markers and not the spiced up electronic guns that fire at rates of 15-20 balls per second. Though this firing limit is not legal for most fields or insurance companies, players that use these markers sometimes ignore the rules and get by the refs who are usually into high rates of fire themselves as this is generally the norm for paintball. As a beginner I advise against playing with experienced players, the skill level does make a differnce and it may alter your will to get deeper into this exciting sport. The best way to play is to being your own group down of 15-20 players depending on what the field requires for a private group. If you think you can handle playing with advanced players once you got a taste, well then good luck and play smart. That being said you are now on the field, make sure those goggles are on snug, not too tight but tight enough to be comfortable.. For safety's sake see if the goggles have a chin strap for extra security (most rentals goggles rarely do) in case you trip and they fall off. If you find your goggles are loose because the elastic band is not as tight as it should be, then go back to the trailer or tent for heavens sake and get yourself a better pair. Safety first. Take a look at your gun, it has a safety and should have a Barrell Blocking Device attached to it. This is the most important thing you have to remember, when on the field take it off, when eliminated IMMEDIATELY put it on. Just as any gun, always keep your marker in safety, and pointed to the ground, especially when you are in the staging area.
The rules are simple, teams are picked, players are marked with colored tape, and the two teams are taken to either side of the field. You wait until you hear a signal, honorably keeping your marker/gun pointed down until the signal is called. In the good old days players played a game of capture the flag which was fun, but nowadays most fields play straight elimination games with minor variations because it increases profits to have players firing immediately at each other instead of sneaking around the woods for hours. In addition you might get exposed to Speedball which is just a smaller field with inflatable barriers called Bunkers. Dont be intimidated, this type of play is fun and immediately in your face as well, even to the first timer. Although some ballers dont want to believe it, there is a split amongst the paintball world, between Recreational or Scenario players and Speedball players. Personally I like both for different reasons, dont let the hardcore players from either side prejudice you as to the other style, each version has its qualities.
So the game begins with a whistle or shout of GO GO GO and your heart is racing. Enjoy the first time, your virgin skin is about to feel the pain, most ballers never forget thier first hit, so revel in the little welt you are about to receive, after ten seconds though you will not even care. Back to the game, everyone runs like idiots for cover, some people try to run and shoot which is a noble gesture though few can get it right, this takes practice to predict the flight as your moving and at the same time trying to hit a moving target. If you want to give it shot you should shoot at the area you expect a player to run and adjust accordingly. Seriously though just worry about finding good cover and also keep in mind to run behind and not in front of those smart guys shooting uncontrollably the second the game begins. If you are dumb enough to run in front, you will feel a singing pain in your buttocks that you will never forget. Know where you are going and make sure others around you know as well before the whistle blows.
Now you are in your Bunker, play tight, meaning make your body as small as possible and always pop your head out first before your gun to if there is anything exposed. Popping your head instead of your gun first gives you more time to react and pop it back in, in case someone is already waiting for you, unless you did more ecstacy than a Hotel Heiress, you should have the reflexes to pop back in time and hear someones stream of balls zipping by inches from your face. That being said it is now a game of pop shoot and pop back in, constantly changing your tempo and area of exposure. Also it is easier to look around than over an object so keep that in mind when you are looking for targets. If you are smart you will only expose your gun and goggles. Why? because those areas dont usually hurt when a paintball breaks on them. What could happen to you if you expose more? Click this link and see.
Paintball Headshot
Funny, kinda, but also sad. It is a perfect demonstration of how not expose yourself during play. And even though it looks bad, dont get intimidated, I'm sure that kid is ok. This wont happen to you though. Why not? Because you are reading this guide, and learning from others mistakes. Also this poor kid was obviously hit by someone who may have been shooting hot, otherwise known as exceeding the legal paintball FPS or feet per second limit. In addition you will play smarter and not expose yourself in such a manner. Lesson learned? Good lets move on.
--------------------------------------------------------- CHAPTER TWO - PRIOR TO GAME DAY
--------------------------------------------------------
- Register Early: Most fields require players to pre-register - For your first time I recommend you should go with your own a private group, or if possible try and see if another group using rental guns and will let you play along with them. Many times people that show up missing a few peeps to make their private group.
- Have ID . You will need a valid Drivers license if you are going to rent gear.
- KIDS WAIVER! If you plan on bringing someone under 18 you will need a parent or guardian's signature on a release or may even need one present. Check the fields website for more details and print any forms you may need. The minimum age to play paintball is 10 years old.
- Medicines . If your on medication bring it!
- Money . Bring Cash for refreshments. They probably wont have an ATM but you never know.
- Food & Beverages: Some fields have good food, most dont.
- SUNGLASSES – Very important!! Even though people are supposed to have Plugs in their gun barrels when off the fields, I have seen on rare rare ocassions idiots forget or clean loaded guns that have gone off, and there is always a slight slight for injury. High tech guns have sensitive triggers and have been known to fire multiple times if not put on safety and handled properly. Don't chance losing an eye cuz of some idiot who forgot to put his safety or barrel sock on. Also I have seen on rare occasions the random ball that comes out of nowhere and hits someone. It might not have the FPS to do damage but why risk it. And sunglasses look cool so what the hey.Cool looking safety style sunglasses should be worn when you are off the field, even in areas where your goggles doesn't have to be on!
- CUP! – Men, you don't want to get shot in the balls. I highly recommend you get a football style cup which is narrow by your ballsack, and is more comfortable so you can run easier. Don't take a chance getting shot in the balls, it will hurt like a biach. I recommend cups that have underwear style holders so the bands don't crawl up your ass. When you are ready to take the next step you might want to invest in some nice Slide Shorts, make sure you review them at pbreview.com first though. If you don't want to wear a cup then at least find a piece of soft foam or even a folded pair of sweatsocks will do just fine - just find something COMFORTABLE you can use to protect your privates. Women also have sensitive ares down there and might want to throw on an extra pair of painties, improvise.
------------------------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER THREE - OPTIONAL THINGS TO BRING
---------------------------------------------------------- The following is a checklist of additional things you should do to make the day more enjoyable if you have the $$ or time to get stuff. There are alsomy special "go ghetto" suggestions for those who dont want to spend the money (paintball is an expensive sport) but I guarantee you will wish you had some of these things that day after the fact.
- For you gurls, consider upper body protection . If its cold out a sweater (thick) and a thick padded bra might do fine, but if you want to save yourself 20 seconds of blinding pain and a nice quarter-sized black and blue dimple that will stay with you for a week or two, you can buy an inexpensive Chest Protector from any large chain sporting good store or find one online. .If you shop around you can find one for less than 20 bucks. Some sites offhand… Rap4.com, 888 Paintball.com, Discount paintball.com and Paintballwizard.com seem to have the cheap prices but do a search and compare because even Ebay has some really cheap slightly used stuff that is always worth buying.
- Camouflage - coveralls which are practical might be available for rental, but you if you don't have camouflage gear, I recommend getting some or at least wear dark rugged clothing. You might want to shed some of your clothes later if it's a warm day, cuz u will be doing a lot of running. Dress in some kind of layered system to help absorb the shock of the paint. (T-Shirt - Long Sleeve Shirt – thick jacket etc.)
- Throat Protector or a turtleneck top – Paintball websites sell neoprene neck protectors for around $7.00 The Neck is a place you want to protect. If you want to go ghetto the next best option is getting a thick headband or two, a bandana, or even tie a T-shirt around your neck. Getting hit in the neck can hurt but is very painful if you get hit on the adams apple. Save yourself this pain.
- Footwear with good traction and “ankle support”
- Bandana or ball cap (dark colors) to help keep paint and possibly Ticks or Chigggers out of your hair. Also bandanna is very helpful for keeping forehead sweat from dripping into your goggles. Always wear the cap backwards to protect the back of your neck, it also helps keep the goggle bands in place. This is a must..
- Leather gloves to protect your hands from natural hazards and hits (Half finger gloves are good because you can handle your gun and load paint easier.
- PODS which hold paintballs are not provided and your Hopper (thing that is on top of your marker that holds paintballs) only holds about 100 shots. A Pod is basically a plastic holder for paintballs with a Belt and pouch(es) to hold the pods, they pop open so you can quickly load your gun. If you are ghetto you can improvise and bring your own. I find that Gatorade Bottles work great. Just keep the tops and clean em. A two pod holder is sufficient but you can also just bring a backpack which is just as good and even gives you some back protection.
- Backpack – An alternative to pods and a good way to carry stuff and protect your back. A good place to keep the paintballs, just make sure the paintballs are protected by some hard type container, and not just in the plastic bag as a shot in the pack will break paint in your pack and render all the paintballs genrally sticky and useless.
- A small bath towel or Paper towels for cleaning up paint hits and splooged barrels – important. Dont forget to take a few extra napkins in your pocket to clean your googles which will get paint on em and annoy you if you dont clean em thorougly..
- CLEAN clothes and CLEAN shoes so you don't dirty up your car on the way back. Trust me your gonna want to get out of the sweaty clothes at the end of the day I guarantee you.
- Plastic garbage bag for your dirty clothes and gear after the game.
- Take a nice dump the night before. Rare is the paintball field that has flushing toilets and my butt is just too good for those smelly porta pottys , expecially after a week of business.
- Water bottle. Poland Spring bottle fit nicely in a pod and can be carried on the field easily. it is important to Hydrate Regularly especially on a hot day. I have seen many paintballers collapse from heat exhaustion because they were not hydrating regularly. If your pee is dark yellow you need water FAST. If it is brown you need a doctor. Dont forget to hydrate.
- Tick spray – Most fields are used year round so they don't get a lot of deers but there is a slight chance you can get bit by a tick or even a chigger. Do not leave skin exposed, tuck your pants into your boots. Make sure to spray your calves on the skin, spray your exposed hair sticking our of the hat, spray your neck, arms, etc. Then top it all off by spraying your pants, boots and shirt. This system has worked for me and I have yet to get a tick yet. Note- Check your body that night after you shower, look for ticks wherever you can, especially your scalp. Check THOROUGLY and even have your loved one also check odd areas like your ass crack to be safe. It will be the size of a pinhead and have a small pimply stingy feel. Sometimes you will just see it and not feel it at all. Don't freak out if you are bit by a tick it takes at least 48 hours for a tick to give you Lyme Disease, if it is an infected tick, since it has to digest your blood and regurgitate it into your system. If you get a tick it must be removed immediately, make sure to be EXTRA gentle when removing it to avoid leaving the head in, or crushing the tick by squeezing too hard with tweezers. Coating it in vaseline first is said to help. Also heating up the tweezers with a match will also help. Make sure to see an MD soon therafter and take some antibiotics to be extra safe.
- Sunblock for exposed skin (there might be areas with poison ivy or oak but rarely, I suggest not leaving skin exposed as you will be running through the woods for the most part.. At least bring a light long sleeve shirt, this wil lalso prevent paintballs leaving marks.
- Moist towelettes for cleanups during and after game
- Walkie Talkies a fun option for some games… also a good way to keep in touch if you get split up from your group.
- Kneepads can be bought in any sporting goods store in the skateboard section make sure they are Extra comfy though or you wont want to wear em. If you are running through the woods its hard to see the short stumps under you cuz the mask part of your googles blocks your lower forward vision a little. I smashed my knee one year I never had the same problem again cuz I have good kneepads now.
- Hand towel, hairbrush & “handcream” for post-game cleanup. Especially if you are a little metrosexual girlyman and want to look pretty after the game. The handcream is for me so I can splooge on you metrosexuals sissies that brought a hair brush to a paintball field..
- No Fog spray for your googles. Doesn't really work – but if you cant afford to get thermal goggles it helps a little (very little). If it is not a hot or humid day, you should be fine without it. If you wear glasses, then this might help slow down the fogging of your glasses. If your goggles do fog up during play DO NOT try and clean them by pullig them off your face a little. Just leave the game, the goggles will still get foggy, it is not worth risking your sight just to see foggy again a few minutes later.
- Thermal Goggles – these goggles will not fog up at all, or rarely do but only under extreme humid environments. The cheapest pair I have found is the X-Treme Rage X-Ray v.2.0 Goggle w/free thermal lens for $24.95 and JT X-fire Thermal for $32.95 – both at discountpaintball.com and will definitely make your day more enjoyable. ( I prefer JT its better quality and fits better and never tried Xtreme Rage but anything beats rental goggles) Also if you want you can rent a pair of Thermal Goggles from the field it is an additional $6.00 but there is no guarantee that supplies will last. NOTE: Fog resistant goggles are a buncha bull and will always fog, if you are gonna make the investment make sure they say “Thermal”
- Paintball Gun The reality is all paintball guns are the same and the rental guns are just as good as any other gun if tweaked to maximum fps. You can only shoot at 280 feet per sec at most fields so it doesn't really matter what gun its coming out of, all the bullets move at the same speed and roughly the same distance. If you go and buy your own gun the only difference you will see is in the rate of fire (some guns shoot 15 balls a sec and are semi) and the amount of times you will need to refill your air depending on the tank you chose, I prefer Nitro tanks since it is less wear and tear on the internal O-Rings.. Accuracy is relatively the same across the board so save your money and don't buy a gun unless you plan to play more than 6 times a year and you have done your research.
- Training: For those of you who don't work out (like me) seriously consider running a mile or two or doing some squats in the few weeks before you go or you will be sore as hell the day after and be very sorry you didn't condition your body a little to lessen the shock. You will be amazed at how many muscles you use that you never used before especially when you are crawling around the woods.
---------------------------------------------------
Gameplay Tips for New Players
--------------------------------------------
- If you get shot wave your gun from the hiding spot before you step out and then hold you gun up in the air and call yourself out “IM OUT.” So that people will stop shooting at you. If you are next to someone who got shot and is trying to get out of the cross fire, stop shooting for a sec so others aren't trying to shoot back at you and accidently hit your friend who is not expecting it.
- If your goggles fog up try breathing out away from your mask, also DO NOT take your goggles off during a game to wipe them clean… its not worth losing an eye to walk off the field with a little fog in your face.
- Always look for cover when in a gun fight.
- Don't be a lookie lou. The worst way to play is to shoot your gun and watch your bullets to see if they will hit. I advise you pop up Shoot and get back down …there is usually more than one person waiting for you to pop up and if you stay up too long you will get ganked. Also try not to pop up from the same spot always it will be easier for someone to get a read on you and pop you with one simple shot.
- Be Cool… . If a fight breaks out you will ruin the day for everyone…getting hit is part of the game, sometimes even at close range, please keep your heads and remember you are going there to have fun.
- Don't wipe. If you get hit acknowledge it. The paint has to break on you though to be called out. If you are not sure you are hit call for a paint check and ref will let you know if you are out. If you are caught wiping paint off you are a cheater and will lose the respect of your friends. Also it is nice to call out a bounce, which is hey nice shot but Didnt break, so the player who saw a ball hit you knows they hit you but it didnt break. When you keep firing back they will not think you cheated.
- Watch the crossfire, before you run across your own players shooting at others give them a heads up so they know you are running across them. The worst way to get hit is from your own boy behind you at close range who was shooting as you ran by him…those shots sting the most and will turn into new nipples in parts of your body you did not expect… keep a heads up to people shooting next to you – always try to run behind them when you move. Look out expecially for little kids in the group, they re notorious for shooting thier own teamates at point blank.
- Don't get Tunnel Vision –Peeple are often so busy focusing on one thing – maybe the flag in the middle of the field, or an enemy in one bunker – that they forget to notice the rest of the playing field where others might be hiding. If you get shot by a ghost ball, you probably fell prey to tunnel vision. Always remember to look on both sides of you, at the bunkers near you and the ones farther away. Who knows, you might even spot an enemy with a bad case of tunnel vision, who has left himself exposed to you – Happens a lot.
- Play tight - Minimize your chances of being shot: be aware of yourself . When you “play tight,” you make yourself the smallest possible target the entire time you are out on the paintball field. Crouch and look through the sides of obstacles, hold the gun and elbows close to your body when you pop out to shoot. Also dont be afraid to get down and dirty. Crawling on teh ground will make you hard to hit and increase your chances of hitting someone who is not expecting it.
- Call a player out. If you find yourself within 10 feet (depnding on the fields rules) of another player do not shoot them at close range or the paintballs will really hurt. Please point your gun at them and call them out. The first person who calls the other out or suprises the other person is the victor. If you both called each other out at the same time then walk 10 paces and draw.
- New players love to waste balls by trying to hit targets that are out of range. There is one excuse for longballing – you don't know your gun well enough to know its range. Remember that most markers can shoot paint much further if fired at an angle than straight on. Once you figure out what your marker's range is, stop shooting at targets beyond that. It's a waste of balls, it's a waste of time, and it's a waste of strategy. Look for another target, wait for your opponent to come closer to you, or move in for a better position.
- Hosing - If a bunker has gaps in it (for instance, if it's made of a bunch of wood planks), it is possible that one of your balls will go through a gap with enough speed to break on the unprepared player on the other side – but you will end up going through a massive amount of balls to shoot them and probably come down with a bad case of tunnel vision – over an objective you might never achieve. It should take you just a few shots to figure out if you can or can't make this kind of shot. If u cant give up and try something else. Paint costs money, and there are lots of opportunities out there. Some people might say hosing is good because it works – but who's the better player – the one who manages to eliminate two people using two hundred paintballs, or the one who eliminates two people by taking eight good shots? Don't bother hosing because you will be mooching paintballs off people for the rest of the day and get really annoying.
- Blind-firing or just pointing your gun around an obstacle is a no no. Dont do this you should be able to see your target the whole time you are shooting at it.
--------------------------------------------------
Paintball Game Variations
--------------------------------------------
- Capture the Flag : This is the most commonly played game. Two team each starts at a fort at different ends of the playing field, be it woods, the idea is to get the other flag and bring it to your fort.
- Center Flag One flag in the center of the playing field and two teams starting on either side trying to get the flag and take it across the field to the other team's bunker (base). I really like this game.
- V.I.P.
One person is the President and he only has a marker with 25 shots. He has a small number of troops around him that have to protect him and get him to an escape point. The rest of the people have to assassinate the president.
- The Alamo
A small number of people have to protect the flag that hangs in the center of a triangle of forts, bases, and towers. A small group stays inside the fort and tries to protect the flag. The other larger group has to get the flag 'off the island' or out of the triangle to a safe outside location.
- Predator Prey
This is an interesting game. Three predators are released into the forest to hide. Then the rest of the crew is sent in to find them. Once a predator is killed they are eliminated and have to leave. But if a Predator kills a prey, the prey player becomes a new Predator. The predator should carry some razor cut duct tape to tape on new predators face mask so they can be identified as such. Thus the object of the game for the Predator is to increase and proliferate, while the object for the prey is to kill all the predators.
- Bunny Hunt
One bunny goes into to hide in a large forest, and bunch of other player's (hunter's) have to kill him. The bunny can escape by making it through to a vantage point and then blow an air horn to signify the game is over.
- Freeze Tag
Another capture the flag variation. If you get killed a teammate can tag you back in. This gets dumb after a while. You have to defend and protect the killed player's so their friends don't tap them in.
- Hostage Rescue
Each team has a hostage from the other team…and must return him "home" unharmed. This game gets very interesting. Each hostage has a blow horn on them so that when they are rescued from the other team and on their way back, the team who lost the hostage has an opportunity to get him back or prevent him from coming back home.
- Kill the Leader
Each team must kill the other team's leader. Each team has to defend their leader. This can become interesting when a traitor is introduced to each side. One player is a traitor and can turn against his teammates, usually designated by the referee. However, adding traitors makes the game more confusing. Traitors cannot actually shoot the leader and can only use a paint grenade to kill him makes the game more interesting.
- Run the Flag
This is another capture the flag variation. Two teams each starts with their own flag in their hands. They have to charge with their flags to the other teams base and hang it there. No need to go get the other teams flag, you (sorta) start with it. The challenge is getting there.
- Jailbreak
Two players are prisoners and are trapped inside a base. There are a few guards outside. The prisoners can only leave from a designated entrance. The guards guard that entrance. The prisoners' friends are on the perimeter waiting to rescue their friends. The prisoner's have no weapons, the guards do. The prisoners' teammates can't fire at the guards until the guards fire at the prisoners. The object is to get the prisoners out without anyone getting killed. The guards succeed if they kill anyone.
- Get the Bands
Every player for himself, and each player has an arm band. When you eliminate a player you take his armband away and he dies (leaves). When time runs out the player that has the most arm bands wins. (Duct tape strips also easier)
- The Bridge Game:
In this game you have a bridge in the middle the field over a dike or a stream. On this bridge it will contain a flag and your mission is to get the flag and take it to your opponents base (this sounds easier then said), but one team should have a little more of an advantage, be up on a higher level or start closer to the bridge.
- Barrel Game:
Eight barrels are spread across some woods and each team has a small area in which the barrels are placed in. The mission of the game is to get the most barrels in your area at the end of the game, during this you can knock out or steal the barrels from your opponents area.
- Slavemaster – Or Everyman for himself (Variation of Predator)
Everyone has 1-2 minutes to run in opposite directions in a closed off field. After two minutes have passed and you are far from shooting range from other players you start to hunt anyone you see. If you shoot them they become your slave and have to follow your orders to help you kill others. Anyone they kill becomes your slave. The game goes on until everyone is under the control of one slavemaster.
- Musketball or Civil War – Take your hopper off and engage in war the old fashioned way. You can only load one shot at a time. Keep the paintballs in a pocket or a cup attached to your gun… this game gets very interesting and is a lot of fun as it involves a lot of patience and teamwork. Watch your fingers though, the bolt can break a finger if you leave it in there.
There are tons more, and plenty of sites that discuss different games in more detail.
With all that you should be fine for your first game. If you have the time of your life,
and still want to learn more? Heres a few good places to start.
